Call for ESPN Research Grant Proposals 2022 16 marca 2022 13:07

Applications for ESPN research awards for 2022 are now open.  The aim of the grants is to stimulate collaboration between paediatric nephrologists in Europe in the promotion of clinical or basic science research pertinent to children with kidney disease.  Research awards are open to all ESPN members working in hospitals or academic institutions within Europe.  Preference will be given to applications which are collaborative projects endorsed by ESPN Working Groups. Applicants submitting single-centre projects are unlikely to be successful.  There are 3 categories of award:

  • General Awards.  These proposals must have documented support of a relevant ESPN Working Group but the Working Group Board does not have to be actively involved in the research project.
  • ESPN Working Group Awards. These are proposals where the relevant ESPN Working Group is actively involved in the project.  Evidence for this by way of accompanying documentation must be provided.
  • Young Investigator Award.  This new award from 2021 is intended to be start-up funding to support new researchers early in their careers. It is open to proposals where the principal applicant is under 35 years old.

The total value of the research grant budget this year is € 60.000.  Individual grants are likely to be in the range of € 10.000 to € 20.000.

All applications will be evaluated by the ESPN council and external reviewers on the basis of scientific merit and relevance to the field. All categories of grant will be scored and ranked together but priority will be given to ensure that one Young Investigator grant and at least one ESPN Working Group grant are awarded each year.

Unsuccessful candidates from previous years may re-apply.  There is a section on the application form to include details of revisions made since last submission. Previously successful candidates may not re-apply until 3 years after their last successful award. Current ESPN council members may not be the principal applicants of any application.

The application form should be completed and returned to espn@espn-online.org with a 2-page curriculum vitae for the principal applicant and any supporting documentation from an ESPN Working Group.  Please note word count limits for individual sections; applicants who exceed the word count will be penalised. A receipt of application will be sent by email.
The closing date is 31.05.2022.  Late applications will not be considered. The evaluation of ESPN council is final and there is no option for appeals.

Visit the ESPN research grant page for application forms.

The winners will be announced during the ESPN General Assembly in Ljubljana and posted on the ESPN website.

Thank you

Stanowisko ESPN Council w sprawie inwazji Rosji na Ukrainę 01 marca 2022 22:14

Dear ESPN Members,
Dear friends and colleagues from Ukraine,

as a European society we condemn any kind of violent attacks on the sovereignty of a country and its citizens. In solidarity we stand by the Ukrainian people and hope that the aggressiveness will be stopped immediately.

As a consequence the ESPN council decided that the ESPN Congress 2024 will not take place in St. Petersburg as originally planned. A new venue will be announced soon. Please await further information.

We are in contact with the President of the Ukrainian Pediatric Nephrology Society to help for their urgent needs. The Polish Pediatric Nephrology Society kindly offers treatment to Ukrainian children with kidney diseases including those who require dialysis or have a kidney transplant if this cannot be provided in their country. We thank to Polish Pediatric Nephrology community for their active and pivotal role in this difficult situation.
However, it is important for us to emphasize that neither our Russian colleagues nor the Russian people are to be held responsible for the criminal acts of their government. But as a European society we condemn any kind of violent attacks on the sovereignty of a country and its citizens. We hope that the aggressiveness will be stopped soon.

On behalf of ESPN Council

ESPN President Rezan Topaloglu

EJP-RD ERN Workshop - Translational research on bone impairment in rare diseases 01 marca 2022 21:55

Dear colleagues,

Within the framework of the 'European Joint Program on Rare Diseases', Pr Justine BACCHETTA (CRMR of Calcium and Phosphate Metabolism, ERN ERKNET), Pr Roland CHAPURLAT (CRMR of Bone Fibrous Dysplasia, ERN BOND) and Pr Federico DI ROCCO (CRMR for Craniostenosis and Craniofacial Malformations, ERN CRANIO) are organizing a European workshop entitled ' Translational research workshop on bone impairment in rare diseases '

The workshop will take place on 9th/10th of June in Lyon (France) and is free of charge. Interested participants (senior scientists, senior physicians, post docs, medical fellows, PhD students) must be part of a full ERN member HCP or an ERN Affiliated Partner institution.

Concept:
Bone impairment in rare diseases can affect many patients. Indeed, this concerns a vast number of pathologies: constitutional bone diseases such as osteogenesis imperfecta, achondroplasia or fibrous dysplasia of the bones/McCune Albright syndrome, but also so-called 'non-osseous' diseases with bone involvement such as X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets, pseudohypoparathyroidism and genetic renal diseases with specific skeletal lesions (such as cystinosis and hyperoxaluria among others). Bone impairment is often not the main clinical problem in these rare diseases but has a major impact on patients' quality of life.
All these diseases require a multidisciplinary team composed of rheumatologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, orthopedists, neurosurgeons, geneticists, radiologists, pediatric and adult specialists.
